Developed prominence in the Portuguese first division with BOAVISTA FC and was bought in 2004 by FC PORTO. Meireles scored 15 goals in 138 appearences with Porto from 2004-2010. In August 2010, Meireles moved to LIVERPOOL for a fee of 11.5 million euros. Since joining Liverpool, Meireles has scored 4 goals and has helped to fill the void of recently departed Javier Mascherano. He was named Liverpool's player of the month for January.
Meireles also plays internationally for Portugal. He gained his first cap for Portugal in 2006 and has since played a total of 43 games while netting 8 goals for his country. He was part of the 2008 Euro and 2010 World cup squads (scored against N. Korea in 2010 WC).
